From October 7th to October 10th, IRIS Mundial presented in New Orleans, during the 2015 Annual Congress of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO), the results on the visual data analysis collected during its mission in Île de la Gonâve, in Haiti. Moreover, after a year of careful compilation and hard work, Dr. Julie Brûlé and Dr. Benoit Tousignant, IRIS Mundial volunteer optometrists, have produced a scientific poster entitled Prevalence of Impairment and Eye Disease in Ile de la Gonâve, Haiti.
More than 1700 people among the most deprived had been examined in 2013 by an IRIS Mundial volunteer’s team, when they went to a disadvantaged area where no eye care services are available. This study provides data for the first time on prevalence of the visual impairments of the islanders, helping to better identify their needs and plan future interventions to improve their ocular-visual health.
The study presented (based on 1724 patients), confirms the prevalence of glaucoma (1%) and cataracts (7%) in this population. Uncorrected refractive errors are frequent (55%), while 13% of these patients show moderate to severe visual impairment. Click here AAO 2015- IRIS Mundial poster to see the scientific poster.
