Three years after the beginning of the PPFB, the results are excellent and the objectives have been achieved. The team has gained more experience, enabling thousands of people in need to find a solution to their vision impairment and to prevent some diseases that can lead to blindness. The awareness and educational sessions that were held help to reduce the impact of vision impairment in these people’s life. Following these encouraging results, IRIS Mundial has decided to support the program for another year.

Budget

$34 400 CAN

Objective

To provide the FODES-5 population with quality eye care. To strengthen the achievements and ensure the program permanency and autonomy in collaboration with the local partner. For this year, there are 4,000 beneficiaries of the program, including 3,000 school children.

There was no ophthalmologic service in this department before the establishment of the PPFB in September 2010.

Implementation

In October 2010, a team of IRIS Mundial volunteers trained the local team (a nurse and a mobilizer assistant) in the planning and delivering of educational sessions and conducted vision screening in mobile clinics and schools. A vision clinic was installed and equipped at the Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes-de Labrousse Health Center to provide ophthalmologic consultations.

Budget

$ 380 000 CAN

  • 5960 vision screenings in schools
  • 3636  vision screenings to adults in mobile clinics
